Doc Hollywood on the Campaign Trail: What Michael J. Fox learned while on Spin City

Doc Hollywood on the Campaign Trail: What Michael J. Fox learned while on Spin City

Kathryn Jean Lopez has a great article about Michael J. Fox’s recent campaign commercials in Missouri and Maryland:

Political commercials are not known for their honesty or subtlety, but these Fox ads hit home in a particularly painful way; their blatant dishonesty does a terrible disservice to those whom they pretend to want to help and malignantly contribute to an already confusing and frustrating debate about basic issues of life and death.

Jim Caviezel, Kurt Warner, Patricia Heaton and others have helped with an ad that counters Fox’s ad. You can view it on YouTube (if you’re brave enough to go there).

The Inconsistent Stance of Pro-Abort Politics

The Inconsistent Stance of Pro-Abort Politics

Fox News ran a story today about a New Hampshire couple were unhappy that their daughter was pregnant.  Instead of any sane form of punishment, the couple allegedly “tied her up, loaded her in their car and headed toward New York to force her to get an abortion.”  Luckily for her and her baby, she was able to escape and the parents are now in jail on kidnapping charges.  I’m curious to see, though, if murder conspiracy charges will be filed.  It’s highly unlikely that they will be, and that’s because the law is unclear and inconsistent with regard to abortion.

W Joins the Party of Death?

W Joins the Party of Death?

It would appear that President Bush has joined the Party of Death:

President Bush Approves Over the Counter Early Abortion Pill, Pro-Life Base Decries Move

I fail to see how this lines up with his professed Pro-Life stance, but my guess is that he doesn’t really have one.  Just as he likely isn’t really a Conservative given how he likes to spend, I wouldn’t be surprised if his ant-abortion stance is just campaign rhetoric.  Maybe South Dakota can do us all a favor and help rid us of this scourge.  Our President has thrown in the towel, and lost many supporters in the process.

Bush Bashing

Bush Bashing

I appears that one of the more popular activities among the Left and Those Who Don’t Consider Themselves Part of the Left but Certainly Aren’t on the Right is to bash President Bush.  I’ll readily grant that he’s worthy of criticism on a number of issues.  There is a difference, though, I think, between criticizing and bashing, and many arm-chair pundits have crossed that line.  Rather than a reasoned discussion of policies, it has become fashionable to constantly mock and scorn the way he comes across.  Whether it’s comparing him to a chimpanzee, ridiculing his pronunciation of “nuclear”, cackling at his dropping the “s-bomb” in discussions of the fighting in the Middle East, or heehawing at his ranch vacations’ activities, many Bush detractors* have lowered themselves to the level of a third grade bully, and it makes political discourse tiresome and predictable.

* I am aware that there were likely those under Clinton doing the same thing, but that hardly changes anything.  “Well, he did it first” is that same third grade bully’s defense.

Teetotal Legalism

Teetotal Legalism

This morning, during the midst of jury duty discussion, I mentioned at work that I’d not have a problem with a law banning alcoholic drinks.  Others in the conversation were a mix of Believers and non-Believers.  After the converstaion ended (shortly after my mostly tongue-in-cheek comment), I was accused of legalism and “not doing the Gospel any good” with my remark.  Both interesting claims.  Let’s dig in.

What a Naive Lyric

What a Naive Lyric

In all genres of music, there are some really inane lyrics.  Derek Webb, regarded by some as the poster child for insightful lyrics, recently released a song called “My Enemies Are Men Like Me.”  While I like the overall statement of the song, I think, the line below aggravates me beyond description:

peace by way of war is like purity by way of fornication
itโ€™s like telling someone murder is wrong and then showing them by way of execution

Those two lines make two erroneous assertions, in my opinion:  that war is always wrong, and the capital punishment is never justified.
